World Vegan Day History:

It is estimated that veganism has probably been around for at least 2000 years, and the idea of vegetarianism (not eating meat) was perhaps around for even 500 years prior to that! As the first evidence regarding vegetarianism can be found in the Indus Valley Civilization particularly in northern and western ancient India. Vegetarianism was also practiced and promoted by many Indian philosophers throughout the centuries later many Greek philosophers like Pythagoras of Samos, also made it part of their life's work to promote acting with benevolence and care for all species. Many followers of Buddhism were also promoters of vegetarianism as they did not believe in inflicting harm on other animals.

In the recent history, Vegetarianism established itself as a significant movement in 19th-century Britain and the United States. A minority of vegetarians avoided animal food entirely. Then in 1843, members of Alcott House created the British and Foreign Society for the Promotion of Humanity and Abstinence from Animal Food, led by Sophia Chichester, a wealthy benefactor of Alcott House. Alcott House also helped to establish the UK Vegetarian Society, which held its first meeting in 1847 in Ramsgate, Kent. However later dispute began to arise between members of the vegetarian community on whether dairy products should be allowed as a vegetarian diet or not and it was at that time lacto-vegetarians said that it is impractical to have a diet without any dairy products along with meat products so they made it clear that vegetarianism includes intake of dairy products.

Because of this in August 1944, several members of the Vegetarian Society asked that a section of its newsletter be devoted to non-dairy vegetarianism. When the request was turned down, Donald Watson, secretary of the Leicester branch, set up a new quarterly newsletter in November 1944, priced tuppence. He called it 'The Vegan News.' The word vegan was invented by Watson and Dorothy Morgan, a schoolteacher he would later marry. This resulted in the formation of the World Vegan Society in 1944. The new Vegan Society held its first meeting in early November at the Attic Club, 144 High Holborn, London. Those in attendance were Donald Watson, Elsie B. Shrigley, Fay K. Henderson, Alfred Hy Haffenden, Paul Spencer and Bernard Drake, with Mme Pataleewa (Barbara Moore, a Russian-British engineer) observing.

In honor of the 50th anniversary celebration of The Vegan Society in 1994, UK celebrity and then Chairman of the Vegan Society – Louise Wallis, decided to commemorate November 1st as World Vegan Day. While deciding on a date, there was a lot of ambiguity as to which date exactly in 1944 was The Vegan Society founded. Aware of Halloween and Day of the Dead, Wallis selected the first of November for the celebrations of this day and since then it has been celebrated annually to promote veganism around the world.

World Vegan Day Significance:

According to vegans, non-violence and compassion towards all of nature's creatures lie at the heart of the vegan philosophy. To them, activities that involve the use of animals as food, as labor, or as entertainment are exploitative and cruel and should be eschewed. For vegans, veganism is as much an issue of ethics as it is of health. That's why many food items which are not directly animal product which primarily includes dairy products and eggs are also forbidden in a vegan diet. So yeah the movement of veganism is more focused on pure morality than any other reason.

So the adherents of veganism generally refrain from using anything that may have been made from animals, such as meat, eggs, milk, and honey. Some strict followers of veganism may also avoid products that use animal labor, including those that are tested on animals. Visiting zoos and aquariums or supporting activities such as animal racing or fighting is also frowned upon by vegans so overall it is a movement which calls for the animal rights and demands fair treatment of them without any forced human intervention in their lives for getting any by-products.

Because vegans do not eat animal products, their diet is solely plant-based. This makes the vegan diet high in fiber and low in cholesterol. Because of this, proponents of veganism suggest that adopting a vegan diet can have many health benefits including reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. However due to low levels of Vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D in plant-based foods, nutritionists, and medical professionals recommend that vegans add supplements to their diets to remain healthy and immune to certain diseases.

We love our planet, it's the only one we've got! A vegan lifestyle saves a lot of water, reduces the impact of climate change, stops rare animal species from going extinct, and overall helps in maintaining the ecosystem of our planet. Well it is true that adopting a vegan lifestyle can be a very challenging task and you might miss the old taste from your life but the benefits of adopting a vegan diet is much larger than all of these troubles and thus this day encourages people to take a look into this matter and make up their mind to adopt a vegan lifestyle as not just that it helps in saving our natural resources but it is also a matter of human morality which everyone needs to focus as well.
