World Food Day History:

Food has been a source of life for every living beings in our planet. Without food there is no life, it is as simple as that! Food has also played a pivotal role in exchange of culture throughout the world through trade since ancient times. So much that today every culture and countries around the world have their specific cuisines. So food had always been one of the most traded commodity in our world. After the formation of the United Nations back in 1945 it was decided that food would be considered as a basic right for living and no one should ever be denied for it as it would be a crime against humanity.

World Food Day was established in 1945 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. But it would be another 34 years before it was recognized as a world holiday at the 20th FAO conference in November 1979. The Hungarian Delegation, led by the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Pal Romany, played an active role at the 20th Session of the FAO Conference and suggested the idea of celebrating this day worldwide. Following this, 150 countries proceeded to celebrate the day once it gained its official recognition by the United Nations.

The main principle behind the celebrations of the World Food Day is to take forward steps to ensure food security all over the globe, especially in times of crisis. The launch of the Food and Agriculture Organization by the UN has played a huge role in taking this worthy goal forward. This day aims to raise awareness of the crucial need for successful agriculture policies to be implemented by governments across the world to ensure the food security of our world so that there is ample food available for everyone in this world.

In recent years, World Food Day has used its annual day of celebration to focus on different aspects of food security and agriculture, including fishing communities, climate change and biodiversity. Like since 2014, the popularity of the day has been used to promote the idea of feeding the world and eliminating poverty from our world especially in the rural nations.

Since 1981, World Food Day has adopted a different theme each year in order to highlight areas needed for action and provide a common focus. FAO issued World Food Day medals each year to commemorate and promote the anniversary. Most of the themes revolve around agriculture because only investment in agriculture with support for education and health can turn this situation around.

World Food Day Significance:

The importance of food is obvious and essential. Healthy food provides us the nutrients and energy to develop and grow, be active and healthy, to move, play, work, think and learn. Foods are directly related to our body and mental and social health because each food or liquid contains particular nutrition such as carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, fats, etc., which are very necessary for our physical and mental growth.

Some food is derived directly from plants, but even animals are also used as food sources that are picked up by feeding food from plants. Some foods are not directly obtained from animal or plant sources they are obtained from various edible fungi, especially mushrooms. Fungi and ambient bacteria are used in the preparation of fermented and pickled foods like leavened bread, alcoholic drinks, cheese, pickles, etc.

Today, the majority of the food energy requirement of the ever-increasing population of the world is supplied by the industrial food industry, which produces food with intensive agriculture and distributes it through complex food processing and food distribution systems. This system has been very successful in our world with regards to making all types of food very affordable and accessible all over the world. But despite so much advancement it is still seen that a large number if people in our world are still hungry thus showing the inequality of our world.

Our planet currently produces enough food to feed every person on the planet. However it is estimated that about 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted annually in our world which makes up about 20% of the total food produced in a year and if this food is saved then it can feed every hungry person on our world. So this day also aims to raise awareness on the issue of food wastage. As we don't realize that how much importance food has! There are millions of people in our world who are severely lacking this basic necessity of food and here we are wasting tonnes of food every year. So we need to be much more careful on this matter.

Millions of people worldwide continues to suffer from the health consequences of malnourishment, which damages growing bodies and brains. That's why these effects their immune system which makes them prone to various diseases and also makes them physically weak so they become useless for any work. Food is something very important for your healthans without it you won't be able to live for long and in deficiency of it you will live a very precarious life full of sufferings. So this day aims to encourage people all around the world to come forward and help those people who are facing severe food crisis for the betterment of humanity.
