United Nations Day History:
The origins of our United Nations lies in the League of Nations, yes before the formation of the UN it was the League of Nations which handled the global affairs. League of Nations was formed after the end of the first world war and the motive of this day was mostly similar to UN which was to prevent more world conflicts and prevent any major war from happening. That's why some people also refers League of the Nations as the predecessor of the United Nations. Obviously we know that it wasn't successful in its mission as only 20 years after the first world war the world got engulfed in the bigger second world war as a result League of the Nations was disbanded.
In 1945, after the turmoil and destruction of World War II, the United Nations were established in order to prevent future devastating wars. 50 governments gathered in San Francisco on April 25 and began drafting the UN Charter, which was adopted June 25 and then officially took effect on the 24 of October. The UN's objectives include protecting human rights, maintaining international peace and security, providing humanitarian aid, upholding international law, and promoting sustainable development.
However, their mission to conserve world peace was made difficult early on by the commencement of the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union. Post Cold War, between 1988 and 2000, the number of Security Council resolutions more than doubled and the peacekeeping budget expanded tremendously. However, with new members came new difficulties. In the 1990s, the UN faced multiple crises with Somalia, Haiti, Mozambique, and Yugoslavia. However despite all of these conflicts all over the world which looked like that it could result in a major world conflict, the UN has been extremely successful in preventing another major world war.
While United Nations Day celebrates the ratification of the 1945 Charter, it wasn’t until 1948 that October 24th was named the official holiday. Then in 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that any country that makes up the UN should recognize it as a public holiday. In regards to the future, the UN is currently working on its Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) which it has set to complete by the year of 2030. The SDGs are goals about a better world with dealing with issues such as poverty, hunger, discrimination, racism, gender-inequality, slavery, etc.
