World Post Day History:
Sending letters to people for communication and passing information had been in use since ancient times may be even before the introduction of paper as during that time also information was passed on by writing on leaves or plants and there are lots of evidence pointing towards it by findings on various inscriptions. However, the development of formal postal systems occurred much later.
The first documented use of an organized courier service dates back to 2500 B.C. in Egypt when for the dissemination of written documents Pharaohs used couriers to send out decrees throughout the territory of the state. The earliest surviving piece of mail is also Egyptian, dating to 255 BCE. However the first credible claim for the development of a real postal system comes from Ancient Persia. The best-documented claim (Xenophon) attributes the invention to the Persian King Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE, who mandated that every province in his kingdom would organize reception and delivery of post to each of its citizens.
Later various civilizations all throughout the world utilized a courier service to pass letters, messages, news, and parcels across empires spanning thousands of miles, inspiring the modern idea of the mailman amd soon this became a very common phenomenon among humanity. The US’s own postal service dates back to Benjamin Franklin as the first postmaster general in the country in 1775.
The postal system was important in the development of modern transportation. Railways carried railway post offices. During the 20th century, air mail became the transport of choice for inter-continental mail. Postmen started to utilize mail trucks. The handling of mail became increasingly automated.
On October 9, 1874, the Universal Postal Union was established as a means of cooperation and regulation amongst its member states’ mail services. Later in 1969, the World Post Day was officially declared as a holiday at the Tokyo Universal Postal Congress in Japan. This date was chosen as it marked the formation of the Universal Postal Union.
World Post Day Significance:
The purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role about the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. The celebration encourages member countries to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post’s role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.
The Internet and later social media networking sites came to change the conditions for physical mail and made it less popular. Email became a fierce competitor to physical mail systems, but online auctions and Internet shopping opened new business opportunities as people often get items bought online through the mail. So in this way the tradition of receiving a mail or package through postal service is kept alive and that's why still it plays a very important role in our lives.
Modern mail or post is organized by national and privatized services, which are reciprocally connected by international regulations, organizations and international agreements. Paper letters and parcels can be sent to almost any country in the world relatively easily and cheaply. The Internet has made the process of sending letter-like messages nearly instantaneous.
Every year, more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day in a variety of ways. In certain countries, World Post Day is observed as a working holiday. Many Posts use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services. Some Posts also use World Post Day to reward their employees for good service. In many countries exhibitions or displays are organized, and new stamps and date cancellation marks are issued. Other activities include the display of World Post Day posters in post offices and other public places.
As a testament to bringing people together, the UPU hosts an International Letter Writing competition for children up to age 15. Winners are selected from each country and the world champion is selected by a UPU panel. This type of activities are done on this day with a motive to inspire people to use more postal services so that this incredible practice can live on forever.
