World Habitat Day History:

Urbanization can be traced back to the first ancient human civilizations. Almost all of the ancient civilizations like the Mesopotamia, Indus Valley, Ancient Egyptians or Chinese were made on the river valleys and had urban areas for trade, commerce and resident as well. However most of them faded away which can be attributed to many factors such as natural calamities, invasions, over-utilization of resources or overcrowding. So all of this tells us the importance of proper urban planning.

Since then we have seen the growth of urbanization around the world however the growth of urban areas accelerated to a great extent since 200 years ago as people went in search of jobs, which were, of course, mostly in cities where factories were located. Over the past 50 years, urbanization has seen rapid growth. A huge amount of people live in urban areas around the globe, and much of this urbanization today is taking place in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

However it is seen that because of large migration of people towards urban centers in search of better livelihood and lifestyle. It has also led to many problems because of the poor planning of the cities or towns which are failing to provide people habitat because of their poor infrastructure and planning and these factors then lead to many issues such as poverty, diseases, deprivement of basic necessities, homelessness, etc.

To address this problem, in 1985, the United Nations created and passed a resolution to celebrate World Habitat Day each year on the first Monday in October. Then the World Habitat Day was first celebrated in 1986 with the theme “Shelter is My Right”. Nairobi in Kenya was the host city for the observance that year and since then it us observed annually at different cities each year with a specific theme.

World Habitat Day Significance:

Cities are engines of growth. Many people from rural areas globally long to move to cities to realize their dreams of a better life. Often this dream is not realized, but people continue to flock to cities for no other reason than a vague promise of a better future and prosperity. A well-planned city can bring just that. Cities can be centres for economic activities and urban challenges can be addressed and opportunities can continue to be afforded to both current and future residents.

On the other hand, cities can also become a setting in which marginalisation, inequality and social exclusion can abound. Access to adequate housing is an important factor in ensuring this is avoided. High levels of population density, coupled with poor building techniques have given rise to shanty towns that have no proper infrastructure, community organization or security of tenure. In the event of a disaster of any kind, a complete breakdown can result in a chaotic situation and enormous loss of life.

Hence it is very important for today's world that all of these issues needs to be addressed so that any future catastrophe can be avoided and all of this can be started with the first step of providing shelter to every human being in the world as it is also considered a basic human right which every human deserves so first we needs to end homelessness.Because of all of that this day is celebrated in many countries around the world and various activities are organized to examine the problems of rapid urbanisation and its impact on the environment and human poverty.

Because of climate change the vulnerability of urban centers around the world have been increased even more and that's why this day also works as an awareness event for today's people which means for us to take sufficient actions now so that the future of our world can be secured. It demands for urgent action before it's too late as cities already are getting overcrowded around the world and still if attention is not paid on this issue then it will be even harder to fix it in the future.

World Habitat Day Theme:

Every year a specific theme is set by the United Nations for the World Habitat Day. The theme for the World Habitat Day 2022 is "Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind."

This theme looks at the problem of growing inequality and challenges which our world is facing today in cities and human settlements. It seeks to draw attention to the growing inequalities and vulnerabilities that have been exacerbated by the triple ‘C’ crises which are COVID-19, climate change and conflict.

The pandemic and recent conflicts have reversed years of progress made in the fight against poverty, resulting in the emergence of newly poor people and those who would have exited poverty in the absence of the pandemic but remained poor, and those who have fallen into poverty on account of the pandemic. Hence it is very urgent now to take action regarding this issue. To tackle these problems first we need to start from cities and must ensure that everyone gets all the basic amenities including shelter first.
