Pastor Appreciation Day History:

The word "pastor" derives from the Latin noun pastor which means "shepherd" and is derived from the verb pascere "to lead to pasture, set to grazing, cause to eat". The term "pastor" also relates to the role of elder within the New Testament, and is synonymous with the biblical understanding of minister. The term Pastor, Shepherd, and Elder are all the same position.

For a long time in the country October has been observed as Clergy Appreciation Month in the U.S. However the first call to honor the church leaders’ contributions goes back to the time of Apostle Paul. As founder of many of the first Christian churches, Paul enjoined the congregation to give ‘double honor’ to the elders who managed the affairs of the church. He was especially concerned about honoring "those whose work is preaching and teaching."

Paul the apostle also encouraged Christian communities around the world to acknowledge those “who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord, and who admonish you.” He believed that holding these spiritual leaders "in the highest regard in love because of their work" is crucial to Christian beliefs. Thus he played a significant role in spreading the message for the respect of the priest.

Even though clergymen had enjoyed special standing in their parishes, it wasn’t until 1992 that Focus on the Family, an American Christian organization led by Jerry Frear, started promoting Clergy Appreciation Month as a national month of observance. In highlighting Clergy Appreciation Month, Focus on the Family urged that there be a national celebration of the clergymen, who play important roles in the functioning of the Church.

Pastor Appreciation Day Significance:

A pastor is the leader of a Christian congregation who also gives advice and counsel to people from the community or congregation. In Lutheranism, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and Anglicanism, pastors are always ordained. In Methodism, pastors may be either licensed or ordained.

An assistant or associate pastor is a person who assists the pastor in a Christian church. The qualifications, responsibilities and duties vary depending on church and denomination. In many churches, an assistant pastor is a pastor-in-training, or are awaiting full ordination. In many instances, they are granted limited powers and authority to act with, or in the absence of, the congregation's pastor.

Pastors prepare weekly messages, manage the financial obligations of the church, and nurture the spiritual well-being of their congregants. They are often at the center of  communities. They are also often involved in the big events of our lives, including baptisms, weddings, and funerals. So even for those people who are not that religious pastors plays a significant role in their life.

So we can see here that pastors and all the other people related to the profession of clergy plays a very important role in our society and that's why their contributions must be celebrated. As of 2019, the number of people employed as clergies in the United States stands at 458,411. So it is a very important source of livelihood for many people in the country as well hence respect for the profession is must given and that's why this day was created.

Pastor Appreciation Day Celebrations:

As said earlier that devotees are gathered on this day to pay their respect and express their greetings to pastors and other staff of the church. Many congregations observe the day by taking up a special offering to bless their pastors. Others may show their gratitude through different means such as honoring their pastors with meals, gifts, and even paid vacations.

You can celebrate the hard work of your pastor in a number of different ways. Each member of the congregation can deliver the pastor a handwritten note; a “Best Pastor in the World” T-shirt can be given to one; you can create a video presentation made of pictures of the pastor in action over the last year, or you can simply give one a heartfelt thanks.

Of course, one of the most important ways to show you care is by assuring that you attend the service on this day and pay attention to the sermon. You can also lend your pastor a hand by volunteering at the organization where they minister, such as a hospital or nursing home. Otherwise you can offer charity or donations to your pastor for the better management of his office or the church overall.
