National Cinnamon Roll Day History:

Cinnamon is a type of spice which has its origins in the Indian subcontinent.  Historical records of cinnamon can be found that date back to at least 2800 BC in Chinese writings. For the first time this spice was introduced to the Europeans by the Roman traders who brought it from Sri Lanka.

Used by medieval physicians, this spice has been known to offer some medicinal properties for healing, such as helping with sore throats or coughing throughout ancient times. By the 16th century, cinnamon got popularized among the Europeans because of the Arab traders and this is likely when it began its use in traditional styles of baking.

Cinnamon rolls are believed to have found their origin in Europe after the arrival of cinnamon to the continent. As Sweden began using it in its pastries, developing the kanelbulle which are nothing but cinnamon buns and they begin rolling out cinnamon rolls by the 20th century. The popularity of cinnamon rolls are believed to rise in Sweden after thr first world war and later after the second world war it exploded and became an important part of Swedish cuisine the reason attributed to these factors can be betterment of living standards of the Swedish people after the war.

Begun in 1999, Cinnamon Roll Day was founded by Kaeth Gardestedt and the Home Baking Council in Sweden and also simultaneously in Finland. The day was established as a way to encourage more people to appreciate and enjoy this national treat of cinnamon rolls. Unusually popular in Sweden, this day is celebrated just near International Children’s Day, which is celebrated on the first Monday of October every year.

National Cinnamon Roll Day Significance:

A cinnamon roll consists of a rolled sheet of yeast-leavened dough onto which a cinnamon and sugar mixture is sprinkled over a thin coat of butter. The dough is then rolled, cut into individual portions and baked. The deep fried version is cinnamon roll or cinnamon bun doughnut. Its main ingredients are flour, cinnamon, sugar, and butter, which provide a robust and sweet flavor.

The fact that this sweet got so popular in Northern European countries like Sweden and Finland is because these both countries are such a cold and dark place. Hence in the winter it means that cinnamon, a warm spice, is particularly enjoyed by the people to keep their body warm. Especially when combined with a warm, yeasty sweet roll that comes fresh out of the oven. Many Swedish and Finnish people have fond memories of coming home after school and enjoying fresh cinnamon rolls made by their moms or grandmas.

The Swedish Butterkaka and Finnish bostonkakku ("Boston cake") is a cake made by baking cinnamon rolls in a round cake pan instead of baking them separately, so that they stick together to form a large, round cake. Whereas American cinnamon rolls are frequently topped with icing (usually confectioners' sugar-based) and are sometimes fried, finished with glaze, and served as a variation of a raised donut.

In Sweden and Finland, cinnamon rolls are traditionally enjoyed during a coffee break, or fika, which is a get-together with friends. In North America, it is commonly eaten for breakfast or dessert. When eaten for a breakfast in the U.S., it may be served with cream cheese frosting. Today cinnamon rolls or buns are ine of the fastest growing dessert in the United States as more and more people are taking interest innit and to further promote it the National Cinnamon Roll Day is celebrated.
