World Samosa Day History:

Today when we hear Samosas we immediately associate it with India and for the right reason too as it enjoys the most popularity in India today and in the west too it is extremely popular among the Indian diaspora.

But do you know one thing that Samosas actually didn't originate in India. It originated in the Middle East sometime before the 10th century. It was brought to India by traders around the 13th and 14th centuries. Today, samosas are so well-loved in India that they can be found anywhere, from homes to fancy restaurants to roadside vendors.

Today it is mostly believed that the origins of Samosa are mostly in Persia which is modern-day Iran as many medieval Persian texts mention ‘Sanbosag,’ which is an early relative of the samosa. And Persia also had invaded India many times in the past to exert its influence so it is possible that Samosas made its way to India and rest of South Asia through Persia.

However it was during the Mughal Empire when the samosas actually became a very popular and common snack item in the Indian subcontinent. After the British colonized India samosas were introduced to the west mostly by Indian immigrants.
