World Patient Safety Day History:

It had been seen that during the ancient times throughout human history patient safety during any treatment or surgery had always been neglected which all caused great damages to the patient of those times. It was only in the modern century when the topic regarding patient safety was first discussed and demand for setting standards for this over the world was called.

The topic of patient safety emerged as a result of the increasing complexity of the healthcare system and the surge in cases of patient harm caused by errors and complacency. Cases of patient harm brought on by negligence are among the top causes of mortality in patients around the world.

In 1999, the International Organization for Migration (I.O.M.) released a report called the “To Err Is Human,” which was among the earliest to address the patient safety culture in the United States healthcare system. Then in 2002, the Joint Commission created the National Patient Safety Goals (N.P.S.G.) program. The aim was to support accredited organizations in addressing key issues concerning patient safety.

World Patient Safety Day was created in May 2019 when the World Health Assembly adopted the resolution for global action on patient safety. The global campaign was the brainchild of the series of Global Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety conducted annually since 2016. It involved strong advocacy and commitment from major international stakeholders. So it relatively a new event only.

World Patient Safety Day Significance:

Patient safety highlights the importance of preventing or reducing the risks, errors, and avoidable harm suffered by healthcare patients across the world due to negligence. World Patient Safety Day is among the 11 global health campaigns which is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). So you can understand the importance of this day by this.

Various recent studies and reports have made shocking revelations which tells that negligence in patient safety is still a very major problem in our world and it will take a long time to eradicate it. As recent studies shows that over 130 millions people every year gets patients harm after receiving medical care. And this results in 2.6 million fatalities every year which can be avoided. It is also seen that developing and poor countries has a much higher rate of patient harm than developed countries.

Healthcare workers can improve patient safety by adopting several safe practices in administering care. It could be as simple as providing patients access to medical records and notes. Another effective measure is to directly involve patients and their caretakers in the decision-making process when delivering healthcare services. They should clearly understand their options regarding treatment and diagnosis.

So this day aims to raise awareness regarding this issue to all the general public also to take notice and care of them while getting any medical care to ensure that it is safe and secure. And it also gives a message to all of the medical staff around the world to be little extra careful as even small mistakes committed by them can lead to devastating effects. And at last it also demands action from governments around the world to ensure patient safety to people.
