World Cleanup Day 2022: History

LDIW established World Cleanup Day in 2018, with the first observance taking place on September 15, 2018 in the small northern European country of Estonia. The concept of celebrating World Cleanup Day spread like wildfire around the world. In 2018, approximately 17,6 million people from 157 countries participated in the global event, picking up or collecting over 88500 tons of waste. The number rapidly increased in 2020, when 11 million people from all over the world participated in the event and collected over 43000 tons of waste, but the number of participants decreased in the previous year due to the pandemic.

Over 60 million volunteers from 191 countries took part in the global event until today, helping to remove solid waste from our environment by cleaning up local communities, parks, trails, beaches, and open spaces. Whereas the goal of the day is to promote a clean outdoor environment for everyone in order to improve the beauty and cleanliness of public spaces.

World Cleanup Day harnesses the power of people all over the world to make significant changes and keep the world from becoming overrun with dirty garbage where there is no green or blue.

World Cleanup Day 2022: Significance

The need to celebrate or observe global events such as World Cleanup Day is critical because humans generate massive amounts of waste every day, which is deposited directly into the soil or ends up in waste-to-energy incinerators. However, a large amount of waste also directly enters the oceans, choking marine life and disturbing zooplankton, both of which are critical to the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Large garbage landfills continue to poison the soil by covering a large area, but they also pollute the nearby lakes, pounds, and water holes, resulting in water pollution and the growth of harmful bacteria and insects that affect the people who live near the landfills.

However, most of the time, solid waste does not even reach landfills and is deposited in the surrounding area, harming local wildlife such as killing dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals such as cows and sheep due to the choking of plastic consumption. Whereas plastic waste clogs the drainage system and emits harmful gases and deadly insects such as mosquitos, resulting in the spread of viral diseases such as Malaria.

Cleaning the outdoor environment of solid waste would thus be beneficial in creating a hygienic and healthy environment, where World Cleanup Day plays an important role in encouraging people to come together and make their area and the home planet cleaner and greener.
