Working Parents Day: History
Working Parents Day's origin history is unknown, but the day is significant in recognizing the role of parents and their efforts in nurturing their children. Because working parents share parenting and household responsibility at the same time, it becomes even more important to honor their efforts and recognize their contribution, but the current situation where man and women both work together and take responsibility of the house was not same all the time.
Whereas we saw significant changes in the family work structure in the twentieth century, between 1700 and 1900, when non-white immigrants came to America in search of better employment, the working model of the society completely changed as both men and women worked together to bear the family expenses. Where the Chinese immigrant working parents ran the laundry shop and the Irish working parents labored.
The 1920 constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote also aided in encouraging women to work outside the home and support their families.
The stereotypical portrayal of men as the sole head of the family with complete responsibility for household expenses first appeared on television in the 1950s and 1960s, where the role of women was projected as housewives with primary responsibility for caring for the family and children; this later became another reason for challenging equal gender rights and prohibiting women from working outside the home.
However, the concept of the family work structure evolved over time, and the most recent concept of dual earners was introduced, resulting in a significant increase in female labor-force participation in 1970.
Whereas the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed in 1978, as well as the recognition of sexual harassment in the workplace, it aided women in working in a safe environment.
Today, more than 60% of families in the United States have working parents or dual earners who contribute to the support of their family as well as the nation's economy.
