Teddy Bear Day: History

The 26th President Theodore Roosevelt was invited to a bear hunt in Mississippi in 1902 by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino, which marked the beginning of the Teddy Bear's invention. As planned, President Roosevelt went hunting with a group, but he was unable to bring down even a single animal compared to the other hunters, who had all already done so.

When Roosevelt's aide Holt Collier saw this, he tried to help by tying an American black bear to the tree and asking the president to shoot the bear so he could participate in the event. However, Roosevelt refused, citing the act as being unsportsmanlike. This story quickly gained widespread media attention and was the subject of a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post in November of 1902.

When Morris Michtom, the owner of a candy store, saw this, he got the idea to make a plush toy and started selling it in Brooklyn under the name "Teddy's Bear." The soft toy named after President Theodore Roosevelt, who was frequently referred to as "Teddy," was an instant hit and gained popularity across all of America.

As the demand for this lovely soft toy grew, huge factories were soon built in the United States for its mass production. Originally, teddy bears resembled real bears with larger eyes and foreheads, but in more recent years, the addition of babylike features meant to increase the toys' cuteness has changed their appearance.
