Teachers' Day History:

The Teachers' Day is celebrated annually on 5th September to commomerote the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who served as the first Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962 and then later served as the 2nd President of the country and assumed office as President in 1962.

When Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan assumed office in 1962 his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate September 5th as a special day to honour him. Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request of them to observe September 5 as Teachers’ Day, to recognise the contribution of all teachers towards the society.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in a Telugu-speaking Niyogi Brahmin family, in Tiruttani of Madras district in the erstwhile Madras Presidency (later in Andhra Pradesh till 1960, now in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu since 1960).

In April 1909, Radhakrishnan was appointed to the Department of Philosophy at the Madras Presidency College. Then in 1918, he was selected as the Professor of Philosophy by the University of Mysore, where he taught at its Maharaja's College, Mysore.

Ever since then, September 5 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day across schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions across the country. And this a time for all the students to honour their teachers through various celebrations.

Teachers' Day Significance:

Famous great poet Sant Kabir has once said "That there is both god and guru(teacher) standing in front of me so whom should I bow and pay respect first, when he asked the God about it he got a reply that it is because of your teacher only that you came to know about God."

And Sant Kabir and his dohas(verses) are very popular in India too. And other than this we can find many references regarding the respect of teachers in Indian culture. Like Guru Purnima festival is celebrated annually which is a very prominent day to pay the respect to your teachers and mentors. And thus it holds a very important place among the Dharmik religions of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

In the modern world too teacher's importance hasn't got lost as today because of the use of technology we are not just dependent on specific teachers but can get as many teachers as we want for learning anything. As said anyone who teaches you anything is a teacher and that's why proper respect should be paid to that person which is something the current generation also neglects most of the times and this attitude is must be changed.

And that's what the Teachers' Day aims to do as reminds all the people who were students once or still are to pay tribute to your teachers by all of the knowledge they have given you and helped you in exploring and knowing the world. And the lessons taught by them always remains in our memories which helps us in taking future decisions.
