Star Trek today is a large media franchise but initially it was started as TV series and it wasn't that successful at start too. The first episode under the first season was aired on 8th September in 1966. Hence this day is celebrated as Star Trek Day today.

Although the ratings of this first series kept dropping throughout the season and thus we can say that the first season was a kind of failure, however later installations proved much more successful. So the show was canceled after some years. However, in 1969, returns of the show through its second season helped garner a cult following and became a hit.

After the success of Star Trek series for the first time the Star Trek convention was organized in 1972 at New York City. And this convention was attended by a thousands of fans and this surprised everyone that how big legacy in so short time this show has created. After this Paramount produced the “Star Trek” animated series, which won an Emmy Award, as well as The Motion Picture, which performed fairly well at the box office.

Following the success of the science fiction movies like Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Paramount adapted Star Trek into cinematic universe with the feature film Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The film opened in North America on December 7, 1979, with mixed reviews from critics. The film earned $139 million worldwide, below expectations but enough for Paramount to create a sequel.

The success of the sequel, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, reversed the fortunes of the franchise. As the film was very profitable. Paramount produced six Star Trek feature films between 1979 and 1991, each featuring the Original Series cast in their original roles.

Then after this movies Star Trek returned to the television with new series from 1991. After again Star Trel was rebooted as a film series in 2009. As of now an expansion of Star Trek universe is planned with "Star Trek 4" is scheduled for a release in 2023.

Star Trek Day Significance:

Star Trek's cultural impact goes far beyond its longevity and profitability. Star Trek conventions have become popular among its fans, who call themselves "trekkie" or "trekkers". Hence this is very significant for all the trekkers to celebrate the foundation of their favorite franchise.

An entire subculture has grown up around the franchise and that's why it very memorable for all the trekkie of that era. Star Trek was also ranked as the most popular cult show by TV Guide. The franchise has also garnered many comparisons of it with the Star Wars franchise being rivals in the science fiction genre with many fans and scholars supporting these both.

The Star Trek franchise has also inspired some designers of technologies, the Palm PDA and the handheld mobile phone. Michael Jones, Chief technologist of Google Earth, has cited the tricorder's mapping capability shown in Star Trek as one of the inspiration in the development of Keyhole/Google Earth. So it is not just a piece of entertainment only infact its influence is much beyond that which has inspired people to be creative and innovative.

After the show, Nichols used this public standing to speak for women and people of color and against their exclusion from the US human space program; NASA reacted by asking her to find people for its future Space Shuttle program. Nichols proceeded and successfully brought the first non-white people and women into the US space program. So this series also helped US space program to progress too.
