Sadbhavana Diwas 2022: Date, History, Significance and Observance

Sadbhavana Diwas commemorates the birth anniversary of youngest Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and it falls on 20th August annually

On 20th August 2022, it marks the 78th birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who was also the youngest Prime Minister of India. 

 This day is observed as the 'Sadbhavana Diwas' or the 'Harmony Day' with an objective to encourage national integration, peace, affection and harmony among all of the Indians. 

This day is also celebrated as a remembrance day remembering Rajiv Gandhi who died at a young age as a Prime Minister because of an assassination.

Sadbhavana Diwas History: 

This day was created by the All India Congress Committee of the Indian National Congress in the remembrance of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Along with this day Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award was also launched in 1992. 

Every year this award is given to those who have devoted their lives for understanding and promoting social harmony among the society. A prize money of 10 lakhs rupees is also given at this moment. 

Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest Prime Minister of India as he became the Prime Minister of the country at an age of 40 soon after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi his mother. So yeah Rajiv Gandhi comes from the dynastic politics of the Gandhi family. 

Some notable works which Rajiv Gandhi has done is he reduced the measures to ease the License Raj. As before him her mother did opposite and stricted the License Raj which effected the country's economy largely. He also established the voting rights at the age of 18 and also formed the Pachayati Raj. 

Sadbhavana Diwas Significance: 

Rajiv Gandhi was a prominent supporter of the youth power as he said that the development of the country depends only on the awareness of the youth of the country. And thus he also formed a Jawahar Rojgar Yojana as an means to hive employment opportunities to the youth. 

Rajiv Gandhi served as the Prime Minister from 1984-89. Well he was one of the most controversial PM of the country as well due to his alleged support to the Tamil Tigers at first during the Sri Lankan Civil War however later he realized and made Indian Army to carry operations in the support of the Sri Lankan Army and this also cause his assassination as he was blown up by a terrorist at a public event. 

Despite all his controversies he ruled India for a complete full term and thus dis many things during his reign some of the famous things includes signing of the Assam accords, introduction of the new education policy to reform the education system, creation of MTNL to spread PCOs around India and along with these there were many other steps.
