Patriot Day 2022: History, Significance and Observance

Patriot Day is observed annually on 11th September and it is celebrated as a remembrance day of the 9 11 attacks which took place in 2001

On September 11th, 2001 the whole country and the world was left shocked after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US during which about 3,000 people lost their lives. 

Hence Patriot Day is being observed to commemorate this incident as on this day we remember those who we lost and give thanks to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to save people. 

For the first time the Patriot Day was observed exactly one year after the 9/11 attacks and it was announced by then President Bush. And since then it is observed every in remembrance to the victims who lost their lives during these attacks and also to pay tribute to the bravery of the frontline workers and also American citizens who stood firmly against terrorism.

Patriot Day History: 

It was really a terrifying and one of the most unfortunate event in the American history. And it was also largest terrorist attack targeting American citizens and US government. It was shocking for whole world too that how big a threat of terrorism is for the world. 

During this terrorist attack four planes were hijacked on September 11, 2001 (popularly known as nine-eleven). The hijackers flew three planes into iconic buildings of the country which were Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after the plane passengers fought the hijackers. Nobody is certain where it was supposed to crash, but some people believe it was headed for the White House, the U.S. Capitol building or several other nuclear plants or some other site. 

The impact of this attack was devastating as about 3,000 lives were lost between plane passengers, those in the buildings that were struck, and front-line workers trying to save people. It was the biggest act of terrorism ever happened in the United States. Since then, airplane security has become stricter around the world as countries attempt to avoid a future terrorist attack like nine-eleven.

About 2,997 lives in total were lost during these attacks and this were caused by only 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists. Majority of lives lost were of the people who worked in the Twin Towers along with many frontline workers like cops, firefighters, doctors, soldiers and other government officials. 

Overall it was a heartbreaking moment for all country during which whole nation mourned and that's why in 2002 when the Patriot Day or 9/11 Remembrance Day was observed millions of Americans participated in it and offered condolences to all the people who lost their lives. 

Later in 2011 the mastermind behind these attacks Osama Bin Laden was finally killed by the US Special Forces operation at Abbottabad in Pakistan thus giving a kind of justice to the victims of 9-11 attacks. 

Patriot Day Significance: 

Patriot Day or 9/11 Remembrance Day is celebrated as a memorial day in which all the lives which were lost during the attacks of September 11 are remembered and tribute is paid to them and people also pray for those families who have lost their loved ones. 

This day also celebrates the unity of Americans and it conveys a message to all the terrorists that people of United States are totally united against terrorism and they will never tolerate such acts of terrorism and those who will create terrorism will be crushed by the force and power of the people of the United States. 

This day also honors the bravery shown by the American citizens and the frontline workers who put their lives at risk I'm order to save many lives and while doing so sacrificed their own lives. So this day along with rising the patriotism of the country also gives the beautiful message of brotherhood which Americans shown during these attacks. 

It is also said that 9/11 never forget the meaning behind it is that such terrorist attacks should never be carried and United States will never allow such attacks to ever take place in the country ever again. And these attacks also affected the policy shift in the United States as they adopted the new doctrine basically said that the U.S. will go to war to prevent any attack threatening the country.

After this attacks only we saw the 'War on Terror' movement around the world in which many countries adopted zero tolerance policy in regards to terrorism and the countries and governments also started to cooperate more with anti-terror operations and missions so that any attack like this can be avoided in future.

Patriot Day Observance: 

On this day the flag of the United States is flown at half-staff at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments throughout the world. Americans are also encouraged to display flags in and outside of their homes. Additionally, a moment of silence is observed to correspond with the attacks, beginning at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Patriot Day is not a federal holiday so schools and businesses remain open in observance of the occasion, but it is a very important memorial day so, many remembrance ceremonies for the 2,977 victims are often held across whole country.
