National Tofu Day History:

Tofu actually has its origins in China and not Japan as most of us falsely assume due to its being too popular in Japan now than China. Tofu is believed to be invented between 206 B.C. and 220 A.D. during the Han period of China. And it is believed that it was invented in the Anhui province of China by prince Liu An of the Han dynasty.

And from there it made its way towards other parts of the world starting from Eastern Asia where it reached Japan. During that time Japan was witnessing rise of Buddhism and this vegetarian diet was promoted among the practitioners and by the 700s the Tofu production became very popular in Japan during the Nara period.

However the tofu lost its popularity in Japan over the years. But the revival of tofu happened during the 1800s as at that time it became very affordable alternative for the poor and the middle class as a source of protein and other nutrients other than the meat products and since then it became a mainstay in Japanese cuisine and remains still today.

In the western world however tofu was introduced as a commercial dish very late around the late 20th century. And it only started to gain popularity in the recent times only but mostly people today associates it with only vegan movement which is wrong as it is a very delicious dish which is enjoyed by East Asians from a long time.
