National Punch Day History:

The first usage of the word 'punch' goes back all the way to 1632 when it was used as a word punchline. Regarding the origins of the punch drink we have sailors of the British East India Company to thank for popularizing the spread of punch, which originated somewhere in India. Thanks to a rise in sea travel during the 1600s, the popularity of this delicious drink began to spread.

The word 'punch' is a loanword from the Hindi language word 'panch' which means five. Originally, punch was made with five ingredients and these were alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea or spices and that's why it was called as paantsch. Some also believe the word originates from the English puncheon, which was a volumetric description for certain sized barrels used to transport alcohol on ship

In 1638, a young German adventurer named Johan Albrecht de Mandelslo wrote down the the oldest known punch recipe in the world. By the 17th Century the drink started to gain popularity in England which was brought by the employees of East India Company and from there it spread to rest of the European countries and then to the world.

Durung that time, most punches were of the wassail type made with a wine or brandy base. But around 1655, Jamaican-produced rum came into use, and the "modern" punch emerged. The by 1671, establishments dedicated to the distribution of punch began popping up all over England.

National Punch Day Significance:

Non-alcoholic varieties, which are especially made for children as well as adults who do not drink alcohol, typically include a mix of fruit juice, water, and a sweetener such as sugar or honey. Lemon-lime soda, ginger ale, or other fruit-flavored carbonated sodas are often added.

Whereas alcoholic punches are common among parties for college and university students. These punches tend to be highly alcoholic and made with cheap ingredients. They are also popularly referred by several other names such as "grain punch", "jungle-juice", etc.

Soft drink manufacturers today distribute many types of “fruit punch” beverages. Most punch mixes are red in color. However, despite the name, they contain a small fraction of fruit juice. Sugar, corn syrup, citric acid, and artificial flavors make up the main ingredients.
