Francis William "Frank" Epperson is credited with inventing and popularizing the popsicle in America. He made the first one in 1905 when he was eleven years old and unintentionally left the fruit drink outside on the glass with a stick or spoon in the chilly winter days. The next morning, a cold and slushy ice cream had been created or invented; this story can still be found on the back of the popsicle treat boxes.

The popsicle was first introduced to the world by Epperson realtor with Realty Syndicate Company in Oakland later that year. Within a year, its popularity spread across the US.

Following Unilever's 1989 acquisition of the business, new flavour were introduced and today there are now more than 20 different kinds of popsicles available.
