International Sudoku Day History:

The earliest origins of this game can be found in 1892, the French newspaper “La Siecle” printed a game that was similar to Sudoku in that each row and column had to contain all the designated numbers, but it differed from Sudoku as it involved numerals higher than 9 and engaged solvers’ mathematical skills, not their logic center.

Then in the following years several other French newspapers also picked on this idea and started to print similar games but still none of them were officially identified as Sudoku that we know today. However these games lost their popularity soon after.

Then in 1979, there are evidences available which points about Indiana architect Howard Garns publishing a puzzle of his own invention (at that time named “Number Place”) in “Dell Magazine” that would become the game we today know as Sudoku. However it was unfortunate that Garns passed away way before his game became so popular in the world.

And it was Japanese gaming industry which popularized this game as Sudoku for the first time and ultimately whole world started to refer it the same. Then it was in 2013 when The World Puzzle Federation designated September 9 as the date of International Sudoku Day and began holding multi-round online competitions in the category on this day.
