International Day of Charity History:

As said earlier that initially this was a holiday started by Hungarian civil society in the honour of Mother Teresa and her achievements throughout life for the service of the poor and needy through her foundation called Missionaries of Charity.

And so in 2012 the United Nations picked up on this holiday and decided to spread it worldwide. So the UN established the 'International Day  of Charity' on this day to recognize the charitable works of all organizations, including the work of Mother Teresa, and to highlight the power of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering.

Regarding Mother Teresa she was born as Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in the Ottoman Empire, and would go on to commit herself to religious life by age 12. Because she had been always fascinated with missionaries from an early age especially with the missionaries in India that time.

Then she decided to leave her home at the age of 18 to become a missionary in Ireland and while doing so later she moved to India to carry forward her work. And thus learned Bengali as she made her base at the Eastern city of India at Calcutta now Kolkata and became a catholic nun.

Her charitable work with full force started after she took Indian citizenship in 1948 and became an Indian citizen. Her charitable work truly began in 1948, when she adopted Indian citizenship and worked with the poorest individuals in the country and helped them throughout her life. And later she died in 1997 at Kolkata in India.

So this date was chosen by the UN to mark the International Day of Charity to encourage people towards charity through the life of Mother Teresa who is known worldwide for her charitable works and is a very famous figure known for charity so in spreading message of charity it is very helpful.

International Day of Charity Significance:

There was a long term demand in the UN to establish a day towards promoting and encouraging charity across the world. As the UN has already made its Sustainable Development Goals that by 2030 it wants to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and all other social evils from our world. And achieving these goals a large contribution by people in the form of charity is required.

Even by popular beliefs throughout the world among all the cultures charity and world of philanthropy have always considered a very noble deed that a person should do if possible. Well it is also to be aware that even though if we are enjoying our lives and still complaining about our lives then must should also know that there are still a large number of people who are even struggling for basic necessities.

According to various recent UN reports too a large number of people and countries in our world are still struggling very hard for very basic necessities like food, drinking water, electricity and all other essential basic human needs. Hence even a very small contribution towards humanity by you is appreciated on this day.

And that's why this day encourages people do adopt the practice of some kind of charity in their lives as it is a good quality to be charitable and helpful. And one thing should be clear that charity doesn't only mean financial assistance you can offer charity even like by donating food to hungry. So being helpful to needy by providing him any help can be regarded as charity and hence must be encouraged.
