Honduras Independence Day History:

Honduras has a rich cultural history. There was a time when the land was home to Mesoamerican peoples, being home to an important ancient city known as ‘Copan’. It was an ancient city occupied by the Mayan civilization from 426 to 820 A.D and played a huge role in flourishing of the Mayan civilization.

Honduras was first sighted by Europeans when Christopher Columbus arrived at the Bay Islands very close to the island of Guanaja on 30 July 1502 on his fourth voyage. On 14 August 1502 Columbus landed on the mainland near modern Trujillo. Columbus named the country Honduras for the deep waters off its coast.

In January 1524, Hernan Cortes directed captain Cristobal de Olid to establish a colony in Honduras named "Triunfo de la Cruz", in the modern day town of Tela. And from this colonization of Honduras was started and by the 1550s the country came under full control of the Spanish rule after the colonists defeated amd killed large number of native Americans from the region.

During the colonial years the region suffered greatly from over-exploitation of its resources by the Spanish Empire as Honduras was enriched with many minerals so it became a very important hub for mining for the Spanish to gain funds. But little to no funds from it were pitted in favor of the Hondurans. And Hondurans was largely discriminated and persecuted by the colonists especially the native Americans.

But then the opportunity finally arrived for Honduras to become independent as the Spain was invaded by France during the 1810s which led to Mexican revolution became successful and this inspired all of the Central American countries including Honduras to fight for their independence against the Spanish colonists.

And so on 15th September, 1821 at Guatemala city all of the Central American countries including Honduras declared their independence from the Spanish Empire. And after winning their independence from Spain they briefly became a part of the Mexican Empire and then became part of the Federal Republic of Central America.

However this didn't last long as well and they became independent from Federal Republic of Central America in 5th November, 1838. But they kept on celebrating their Independence Day on 15th September from Spanish like other Central American countries.

Honduras Independence Day Significance:

Today Honduras plays a huge role in Central America it is a large country in the region with a population of over 10 million. Although Honduras isn't a very stable country and it has experienced various regime changes, civil wars and rebellions throughout its history but this day gives a chance to all of the Hondurans to put aside their differences and celebrates the unity of Honduras.

During the colonial years too, Honduras suffered greatly at the hands of Spanish colonists as it was heavily mined and was deprived of its resources and not just that the ethnic tensions created by the Spanish in the region still causes problems today. And local Hondurans were highly discriminated and persecuted by the Spanish colonists especially the native Americans. So this day also is a reminder of the dark past of the country.

Thus this day encourages the people of Honduras to show unity and take forward their country together. This day also celebrates the spirit of Honduras and inspires people for a better and hopeful future if all of the Hondurans works together in helping in the development of their country.

This day also reminds the people of the value of independence as this freedom was denied to their ancestors for a long period of time by the cruel oppressors. And that's why their sacrifices made for the country's independence should never be forgotten and thus this day works as a memorial for all the heroes behind the freedom movement of Honduras.
