In India, the Engineers Day is celebrated annually on 15th September which commemorates the birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya

National Engineers Day is celebrated annually on 15th September in India which commemorates the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the greatest engineers of India. 

And thus this day is also celebrated as the Visvesvaraya Jayanti celebrating the birthday of one of the most legendary engineers in Indian history whose legacy is still unmatched by anyone. 

Along with paying tribute to Sir M. Visvesvaraya this day is celebrated in honour of all of the engineers across the country and encourages people to appreciate engineers and acknowledge their contribution in development of the country.

Engineers Day History: 

In 1968, the Indian government declared Sir M Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary as Engineers Day of the nation. Since then, this day is celebrated to honour and acknowledge all engineers who have contributed and still do so to build a modern and developed India.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, more commonly known as Sir MV, was born on 15 September 1860 in a Telugu Brahmin family, in Muddenahalli of Mysore kingdom. He was a civil engineer, statesman and the also the nineteenth Diwan of Mysore who served for a period of seven years, from 1912 to 1919. 

During his career the notable works of Sir M Visvesvaraya include development of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysuru, irrigation system implementation in the Deccan Plateau, flood protection system for city of Hyderabad, etc.  And along with these he executed many difficult civil engineering projects as well and that's why he is regarded as one of the greatest engineers of all time. 

During his period when he served as the Diwan of Mysore, M Visvesvaraya founded many industries such as the Mysore Soap Factory, Bangalore Agricultural University, State Bank of Mysore, Mysore Iron and Steel Works, Government Engineering College and many other industries as well. These industries were responsible for providing livelihood to thousands of people in the state of Mysore. 

And that's why Sir M Visvesvaraya also received various prestigious awards during his lifetime which includes award of Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire during British India and after independence Sir MV was honoured with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. He also received an honorary membership of London Institution of Civil Engineers, a fellowship from the Indian Institute of Science, and several other degrees from eight universities of the country. 

Engineers Day Significance: 

According to several reports India has the 2nd largest number of engineers on the world and that's why it is also regarded as the country of engineers by some. Today engineering contributes a large part of Indian economy and it is very important for India's overall development. 

This day urges all of the engineers in the country especially civil engineers to take Sir M Visvesvaraya as a role model in accomplishing their tasks and contributing a lot for the country's development. And civil engineering is very important for India as recently the country is witnessing a heavy construction boom as the country is heavily investing on its infrastructure to make it world class for easier connectivity. 

Other than civil engineering we all know that how big India has become in IT industry and it is even growing at a very fast rate today also and running this industry is carried out by all the hardworking software engineers in the country. Other forms of engineering like mechanical, aeronautical, chemical, computer, etc. are very crucial for India's development too and also employs a large workpool of talent.

But it is seen that many people today doesn't pursue engineering even after pursuing engineering due to various factors like they were unable to find jobs. But this also happens because of lack of skills and proper knowledge as many people even today only studies engineering for just getting a degree which is totally wrong engineering is a profession of passion and without being interested or passionate about engineering you can't excel in engineering. So people must be serious before choosing engineering as a profession. 

This day also inspires the youth to become engineers but through passion and interest and not just for namesake! And engineering is already considered as a high level white collar profession today with decent salaries at start and then huge income on reaching high positions. So overall engineering is a very great profession to choose actually.

Engineers Day Celebrations: 

On the occasion of Sir M Visvesvaraya birth anniversary, a memorial is held for him at his birthplace in Muddenahalli. The memorial is managed by Visvesvaraya National Memorial Trust and exhibits the awards, titles and personal belongings of Sir MV, including his living room, spectacles, cups, books,  etc. The memorial is organized adjacent to his house, which is considered as a temple by the local people of Muddenahalli.

Senior ministers and politicians of the nation also pay tribute to Sir M Visvesvaraya on this day and address him as a great engineer and statesman on the occasion of his birth anniversary with various information regarding him is given through inspirational speeches. 

On this government and many private institutions also organises various events in appreciation of the engineers and for spreading regarding awareness of this day to the general public and asks people to pay their all the hardworking engineers of the country who plays such a huge role in development of the country. 

Along with India the neighboring Sri Lanka and African country Tanzania also celebrates their Engineers Day on 15th September and they have the same purpose as well to celebrate and honour all of the engineers in the country and recognizing their contribution towards building of the nation. 

Engineers Day Theme: 

The theme for this year's Engineers Day in 2022 is yet to be decided, however last year in 2021 the theme of Engineers Day was "Engineering for A Healthy Planet- Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report."
