9/11 Remembrance Day: History
On September 9, 2001, four planes were hijacked by 19 terrorists connected to the Islamic extremist organization al Qaeda, who then crashed them into the most famous structure in the country. At the time of the hijacking, there was not much high security during boarding, and the hijackers were successful in carrying out suicide attacks against targets in the country, killing over 3000 civilians.
The first hijacked plane, a Boeing 767, crashed into the north tower of New York City's World Trade Center, and the second plane, a Boeing 767-United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the south tower near the 60th floor.
Causing the death of hundreds of people instantly, the day was considered a terrific day in the United States, and the entire country was on high alert after these two crashes, where all first responders took responsibility in rescuing the citizens under attack.
However, news of another crash arrived, and this time another plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon, resulting in the devastating loss of the US Department of Defense's headquarters.
The north building of the twin towers collapsed at the time, in the World Trade Center towers, where only six people survived and more than 10,000 thousands were injured.
Flight 93 from Newark, New Jersey, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all 44 passengers instantly. It is believed that the pilot and passengers of the flight stopped the hijackers from crashing the plane to the targetted location, where many theories state that the hijackers were heading the plane towards the White House.
