History:

Many of us might have somewhat familiar with the French revolution as it is a very common subject in history textbooks around the world as it was one of the first kind of revolution in modern era which led to complete change of system by the people but if you don't then don't worry we are just gonna discuss it.

If we sum up the whole French revolution  then it all started with the French society divided into various social classes according to occupation and hereditary. And although it was very complex but in a short people felt oppressed and vowed to change the system and ultimately leading to a very violent way to achieve it.

And the storming of the Bastille on 14th July was a key turning point in the French revolution. As on this day when the people surrounded the Bastille, Governor de Launay was the incharge of the Bastille that time and he was guarded by French-guards. Although he tried to ease tensions but later misunderstanding developed and talks failed which ultimately led to death of Governor Fe Launay along with other defenders by the mob. And not just that even his head was later spiked, yeah this all sounds very brutal but that's how French Revolution went and it still has an impact on the modern French nation.

Significance:

So yeah although the history tells that French revolution wasn't a success because literally it went from a monarchy to dictatorship first by Robespierre and then by the famous military general Napoleon Bonaparte.

However the revolution wasn't a complete failure as it did help the French society to be a little more equal than the previous one. And it is more idolized not for it's success but for celebrating the will of the people as it was the first time when the French people asked fir their rights by challenging the cruel system.

So yeah that's why French people still takes it very seriously and celebrates it through joy and emotions. And not just in France but it celebrated globally by French expats and also in Belgium as it has a large French speaking population.
