The Loomba Foundation, an Indian origin group that protects women's rights, organized or led the first International Widows Day in 2005 with the goal of raising awareness about the subject of widowhood.

In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution (A/RES/65/189) designating June 23rd as International Widows Day in order to raise awareness of the specific support that widows require.

The day's popularity has grown as a result of the United Nations' recognition, and it is now extensively observed throughout the United Nations, South Asian countries, and also in several African countries.

According to the UN's most recent report, there are more than 258 million widows worldwide, with at least 115 million women suffering from poverty, injustice, and social stigmatization, as most women in developing countries rely on their husbands for daily survival; however, the situation of widows in developed countries is far better.

Over the years, we've witnessed, heard, and discussed the difficulties that a widow must overcome in order to move on with her life. On the basis of their marital status, she has to endure economic insecurity, prejudice, stigmatization, and damaging customary behaviors for the rest of her life.

As a result, International Women's Day plays an important role in assisting these widows by raising society awareness about the challenges they encounter, as well as encouraging women to become self-sufficient enough to deal with any situation.

"Sustainable Solutions for Widows Financial Independence" is the theme for "International Widows Day" 2022, which will showcase or spotlight the unresolved difficulties or obstacles affecting women's rights around the world.

On social media, the hashtag #internationalwomenday2022 is used to promote the day's subject. The day's theme encourages or persuades the public to protect women from injustice and other societal ills.
