The day was designated to raise awareness about migratory birds, but the idea for dedicating a day for migratory birds was arrosed in the United States in 1993, when a group of bird conservatives initiated celebrations of the 'International Migratory Bird Day' (IMBD) to highlight the importance of conserving Migratory Birds. 

In 2006, the United States declared World Migratory Bird Day to be observed on the second Saturday of May each year. The day was inspired by the United Nations Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds. Since its inception, World Migratory Bird Day has been celebrated in 118 nations around the world. 

Since the annual celebration of World Migratory Bird Day, the event has grown in popularity each year, demonstrating significant changes in people's attitudes toward migratory birds, with more people, countries, and organizations joining in the celebration each year.

As a result, World Migratory Bird Day is observed annually to raise global awareness about the importance of conserving migratory birds and their habitats, as well as the threats that migratory birds face.
