World Fair Trade Day 2022: History

Today the Fair Trade practice has became a global movement,  however the origins of Fair Trade can be traced back to the late 1940s in the United States of America, when SERRV began trading with underprivileged communities in the South.

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), formerly known as the International Federation of Alternative Traders ("IFAT"), was founded in 1989 with the purpose of improving producers' livelihoods through fair trade standards.

The fair trade movement was instrumental in the establishment of European World Shops Day in 1996, which inspired the IFAT to establish World Fair Day, which was first observed on May 4, 2002, and is now observed annually on the second Saturday of May. More information about the day can be found at www.wftday.org.

Fair trade can be defined as a certification of a standard that assures the quality of the production and supply of a product or ingredient, with better working conditions and pay for farmers and workers.
