1. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) - Delhi 

The Indra Gandhi International Airport is named after Indira Gandhi, India's first female prime minister. The airport covers an area of 5,106 acres and is located in India's capital. It is the busiest airport in India, handling over 37 million passengers per year. The airport is publicly owned and operated by the Airports Authority of India, having previously been owned by the Indian Air Force.

2. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) - Mumbai 


The second busiest airport in the country, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, Maharashtra, handles about 950 aircraft movements per day and 52 aircraft movements per hour. The airport began as RAF Santacruz in the 1930s. The airport is around 1,500 acres in size and had three runways when it first opened. The airport, which is equipped with world-class services and offers the best passenger experience, was named World's Best Airport at the 2017 Airport Service Quality Awards. 

Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire in the 17th century, is honored with the name of the commercial airport.

3. Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) - Bangalore 

Kempegowda International Airport, named after the Kempe Gowda, who fortified Bengaluru in 1537 during the Vijayanagara Empire, is the country's third busiest airport. The airport, which spans 4,000 acres and is owned by a public–private partnership, is India's first totally solar-powered airport.

HAL airport was the major airport serving Bangalore till 2004 when Kempegowda International Airport opened. Domestic and foreign flights are welcome at the commercial airport.

4. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) - Hyderabad 


Hyderabad Telangana is home to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. It is India's fourth busiest airport, with an area of about 5,495 acres and an annual passenger capacity of 12.4 million. The public-private partnership owns the commercial airport.

Begumpet Airport was the primary airport serving Hyderabad until 2008, when construction was completed. The airport authority of India operates the commercial airport, as it does every other public airport in India.

5. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) - Kolkata 

Commercial Airport was founded in 1924 and is India's fifth busiest airport. It is named after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who is best known for his contribution to India's independence movement.

The airport, which encompasses around 1670 acres and serves over 22 million passengers annually, is also known as Kolkata Airport and Dum Dum Airport by the local community. The Airport Authority of India owns and operates the airport entirely.

6. Chennai International Airport (MAA) - Chennai 

Chennai International Airport is India's sixth busiest airport. The international Commercial Airport of Chennai is served by both train and metro systems, making it easier for passengers to get there. The airport covers 1300 acres and serves over 40 million travelers annually.  

7. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) - Ahmedabad 


The airport was named after India's first deputy prime minister, also known as the Iron Man of India, for his role in uniting the country. The airport is owned by a public-private partnership led by the Adani Group. The airport is the second busiest in India and the largest in Gujarat. The airport, which covers an area of 1,124 acres and accepts international and domestic flights, serves over 3.64 million passengers per year.  

8. Dabolim Goa International Airport (GOI) Goa

It is a civil enclave airport that is usually used for military operations and is owned by the Government of Goa and the Indian Navy. The Dabolim Goa International Airport covers an area of 688 hectares.

The airport was built in 1955 and is managed by the Airport Authority of India.

9. Cochin International Airport (COK) - Kochi 

Cochin International Airport, the fourth largest in South India, is jointly owned by the private and public sectors. It was built in 1936 by the Kingdom of Kochi. The airport is spread out over 1,300 acres and runs entirely on solar power. The Airport Council International named the airport the best in Asia-Pacific in 2020.  

10. Pune Airport (PNQ) - Pune  

The Airport Authority of India operates the airport, which is located in Pune, Maharashtra. The Indian Air Force is the owner of the airport. Every year, 8.09 million travelers pass through the airports. The airport handled both domestic and international aircraft.

11. Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (LKO) - Lucknow 


The International Commercial Airport is located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and is named after India's fifth Prime Minister, who was born on December 23, 1902 in Uttar Pradesh. The Airport is operated by a public-private partnership led by the Adani Group.

In terms of passenger traffic, the airport is ranked 11th in India. The airport, which was previously known as Amausi Airport, was built in 1986.
