Narasimha Jayanti is an auspicious festival in Hindu mythology. Narasimha, also spelled Narasingha, is Lord Vishnu's fourth incarnation among the ten primary avatars of Vishnu. As the name Narasimha suggests, this Avatar of Lord Vishnu is half human and half lion. Narasimha is a Sanskrit word made up of two words: "nara" which means man, and "simha" which means lion. The word "man-lion" refers to a Vishnu avatar who is a hybrid beast.

Lord Vishnu is one of the most important Hindu gods, alongside Shiva and Brahma, and is known as the Preserver. The day is significant for those who follow Vaishnavism, as Vaishnavites are the largest Hindu sect, accounting for around 641 million Hindus (or 67.6%).

Narasimha Jayanti 2022: Significance

The day is commemorated to commemorate Lord Vishnu's incarnation as Narasimha. According to Hindu legend, Prahlada was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, which turned his own father Hiranyakashipu against him because he believed himself to be greater than god and Vishnu. To prevent Prahalad from worshiping Lord Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu began to torment his son, using a variety of tactics and making repeated attempts to kill Prahlad, but he was never successful.

To put an end to the evil and safeguard Prahalad, Lord Vishnu donned his Narasimha Avatar and strapped Hiranyakashipu to his thighs and tore his belly out with his fearsome nails in the evening, fulfilling Hiranyakashipu's wish granted by Lord Brahma. Click Here to learn more about this story.
