Since 1952, when the Joint Resolution enforcing or recognizing the National Day of Prayer was passed by the US Congress and the law was signed by President Harry S. Truman, the National Day of Prayer has been celebrated annually on the first Thursday of May. However the trace of the first, first call of prayer can be seen in the year 1775 when the Continental Congress  brought the observance of fasting and praying to all the colonies. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, moving the celebration date to the first Thursday of May.
