Chhatrapati Shivaji is one of the greatest Indian monarch, who shook the foundations of the Mughal Empire with the beginning of Maratha Empire.

On January 19, 2022, we are celebrating Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's 392nd birthday. Shivaji Jayanti or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti has been celebrated every year since 1870 to pay homage to Chhatrapati Shivaji who shook the foundations of the Mughal Empire with the beginning of the great Maratha Empire.    

History 

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti's celebration was first planned in 1870 by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, who discovered Shivaji Maharaj's mausoleum in Raigad, and held its first celebration in Pune, Later the event uplifted by Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Both Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Jyotirao Phule were inspired by Shivaji's concept of 'Hindavi Swaraj' means (Indian self-rule).  

Maratha Empire in its Peak

Shivaji was born on 19 February 1630 in the city of Junnar in the Pune district. In 1645, the teenage Shivaji first expressed his concept of 'Hindavi Swaraj'. Shivaji was one of the greatest diplomatic, strategic and secular leader, he understood the importance of forts and army in building his self rule. Thus he started recruiting from Maval and strated capturing the forts in a young age of 15, however the development was paused from 1649-1655. Shivaji restarted his campaign and captured the Javali fort, a triumphant victory to show his strength and vision. The victories at the Battle of Pratapgarh in 1659 and the Battel of Pavan Khing in 1660 consolidated the foundations of the Maratha Empire. Shivaji's Confrontation with Mughals began in March 1657. Shivaji was crowned King of Maratha in a grand ceremony in Raigad on June 6, 1674.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated all over India, but the main celebration can be observed in Maharashtra. The main purpose of celebrating Shivaji's birthday is to promote the influence of Chhatrapati Shivaji among the youth, who can be inspired by the great personality and knowledge of Shivaji Maharaj.
